Contesto / sfida

Il cambiamento climatico sta avendo un impatto drammatico sulla regione del Mediterraneo e occorre trovare soluzioni per adattare le pratiche dei sistemi agricoli all'aumento delle temperature, alla siccità e alla salinità del suolo. L'adozione di sistemi colturali misti come quelli agroforestali può contrastare la perdita di agro-biodiversità e la riduzione della fertilità del suolo. Il fico (Ficus carica L.) ha un grande potenziale di espansione grazie a preziose caratteristiche nutrizionali e nutraceutiche, unite alla capacità di adattarsi ad ambienti secchi, calcarei e salini, rendendo questa specie estremamente interessante per una produzione commerciale sostenibile nella regione mediterranea, anche in relazione al cambiamento climatico.

Obiettivi

Questo progetto ha lo scopo di valutare le prestazioni e la variabilità genetica delle varietà di fico integrando nuove conoscenze e tecnologie per la valutazione della biodiversità con le conoscenze provenienti dagli agricoltori locali e dalle parti interessate. Per questo, il progetto intende: a) esplorare, valorizzare e valutare la variabilità genetica dei genotipi di fico in collezioni spagnole, tunisine e turche, utilizzando un approccio di genotipizzazione mediante sequenziamento del DNA; b) fenotipizzare i genotipi di fico per identificare piante con le caratteristiche desiderate dagli stakeholder e più adatte ad essere coltivate in condizioni di siccità/salinità; c) identificare i loci genomici collegati alla resa e all'adattamento alla siccità/salinità eseguendo studi di associazione genome wide (GWAS) d) diffondere i prodotti e i risultati del progetto alle parti interessate per massimizzarne l'impatto.

Ciò consentirà di selezionare I genotipi selezionati, più adatti alle condizioni ambientali derivanti dai cambiamenti climatici, potranno essere introdotti nei sistemi agricoli tradizionali per ottenere sistemi colturali misti come quelli agroforestali.

Impatti previsti

FIGGEN impatta su valorizzazione e conservazione della biodiversità grazie alle analisi effettuate su 300 genotipi del germoplasma di fico, comprese cultivar trascurate o sottoutilizzate provenienti da nazioni tra i principali produttrici di fichi nella regione mediterranea.

L'introduzione nei sistemi agricoli di nuove cultivar di fico più adatte alle condizioni di siccità/salinità favorirà la produzione sostenibile di fichi e contribuirà ad attuare un'agricoltura basata sulla biodiversità, più resiliente alle incertezze climatiche e più sostenibile, producendo effetti benefici in termini di conservazione delle risorse naturali, inclusa la biodiversità sopra- e sottosuolo, la conservazione del suolo e dell'acqua, la valorizzazione di suoli poveri e, di conseguenza, migliori servizi ecosistemici.

Ciò avrà un impatto positivo sia sul benessere che sul reddito degli agricoltori, e sull'agroecosistema nel suo complesso, e in particolare sulla produzione di fichi, permettendo di invertire il trend decrescente registrato negli ultimi anni nell'area mediterranea.

Per quanto riguarda l'impatto scientifico, l'identificazione di geni o marcatori molecolari legati alla resa e all'adattamento alle condizioni di siccità/salinità sviluppata mediante la GWAS contribuirà al miglioramento genetico di questa specie sviluppando conoscenze sulla genetica e fisiologia della pianta sotto stress abiotici e nuove varietà meglio adattate al cambiamento climatico.
